We bought the compilation because it contained some otherwise unavailable material, but also because it's cheaper than buying the mini books. If you want to be really cheap, they're available for free download through the Gutenberg Project.
This edition has a good layout, and the pictures are print are big enough to be a good story book for bedtime. The stories themselves are pretty slow going and usually brutal. My daughter still isn't ready for a lot of this book. I would say it's for ages 3 and up.
There was a television adaptation done that we like to watch called The World of Peter Rabbit and Friends. It was made in Britain and is absolutely delightful, but the American release has most of the voices dubbed, especially the rural accents. We ordered the British release on Ebay and watch it on our computer, because the American child actors on the dubbed version are too annoying to listen to.
