By Mercer Mayer
Oh, boy! We read this book ALL THE TIME. It's a book about Mom! About loving your mom! About going out alone with just your mom and having the best time ever!
It's part of a series of popular books by Mercer Meyer about a toddler critter and his mishaps.
That being said, This one in particular is not that amazing. As a feminist, I take issue with the fact that Mom does boring things like shop for dresses, eat at a fancy restaurant, and go to the art gallery. Also that toddler boys don't like those things. Apparently the "Just Me and My Dad" book is about a fun camping trip, so the content of this book is even more frustrating.
When I read it with my daughter, I often omit things and make up my own story.
It's a book that is enjoyable for kids but is secretly addressed to parents. A bit patronising, but not the worst of its kind. Mercer Meyer did a way better "Little Critter" book with the exact same style of humour called "Just For You". It was the first book in the series.
I should probably also mention that there's a point where he goes to the museum and dresses like a Plains Indian, so that's a bit weird, but it's supposed to be an inappropriate moment, so maybe it's okay?
